History and establishment

  1. 2000

Al Hakeemiyya was established in Mariyawatte, Gampola, by Al-Haj Maulavi D. M. Hussaindeen.

  2. Today

The madrasa continues under the leadership of its founder as Principal, operating as a part-time Qur'an and Hifz madrasa alongside students' regular schooling.

A part-time madrasa means children do not have to choose between their schooling and their Islamic education. Classes are held in the afternoons and evenings on weekdays, and through the day at weekends.

It operates as a part-time Qur'an and Hifz madrasa, with classes conducted alongside students' regular schooling.

Assalamu Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh.

Every meaningful journey begins with a vision. The journey of Al Madrasathul Hakeemiyya began with a single student and a sincere intention: to make Islamic knowledge accessible to children, nurture good character, and guide individuals towards a life of faith, discipline, and purpose.

What began as a humble initiative has grown into an institution serving more than 100 students, Alhamdulillah. Over the years, our institution has contributed to laying the educational foundations for more than 26 Huffaz and Islamic scholars, while over 12 of our former students have progressed to university-level education. These achievements represent not merely numbers, but the lives, aspirations, and futures shaped through knowledge and guidance.

One of the most meaningful aspects of our journey is the trust that families have placed in us across generations. Today, children of our former students, including members of the second and third generations of the same families, continue to receive their Islamic education at Al Hakeemiyya. This enduring connection reflects a legacy built on trust, commitment, and the lasting value of religious education.

However, our vision has always extended beyond academic achievements or the completion of religious studies. We believe that authentic Islamic knowledge should influence the way individuals live, make decisions, build relationships, raise their families, and contribute to society. We have witnessed how the knowledge and values acquired through Islamic education can help individuals lead more meaningful and responsible personal and family lives.

Our institution also seeks to support individuals and families who may not have had sufficient opportunities to acquire Islamic knowledge earlier in life. Through appropriate guidance and learning opportunities, we strive to help young women, young men, parents, and other members of the community reconnect with their faith, strengthen their understanding of Islam, and make positive changes in their lives.

From the beginning, our purpose has been to complement children’s mainstream education by providing essential Islamic learning beyond regular school hours. We aspire to establish a strong foundation that enables students to progress towards advanced Quranic studies, Hifz programmes, higher Islamic education, and other educational opportunities. Where further learning is required beyond what we offer, we seek to guide students towards suitable institutions and pathways.

Our vision is not confined to a single village or a particular group of families. We aspire to serve the wider Gampola community and beyond, recognising that Islamic knowledge, moral values, discipline, and good character are essential to building a responsible and compassionate society.

As we look towards the future, we remain committed to strengthening our educational approach, preserving our founding principles, and creating opportunities for future generations to grow in knowledge, faith, and character.

Al Hakeemiyya is more than a place of learning. It is a foundation for faith, a source of guidance for families, and a legacy that continues from one generation to the next.

May Allah accept this humble effort, bless every student and family associated with our institution, and allow Al Hakeemiyya to remain a source of beneficial knowledge and lasting goodness for generations to come.

Ameen Ya Rabbal Alameen.

With sincere prayers and commitment,

The Founder

Al Madrasathul Hakeemiyya

Al-Haj Maulavi D. M. Hussaindeen
